Q:  have read this Column a few times, and I want to say WOW what a great thing your doing. I feel a little funny writing into something like this but I feel that parents should teach their children about sex in the home and my daughter wants to take it in school, I don't want her to feel alienate from her friends but I really don't want her to go through this class. Am I being a prude about this or am I right in standing my ground? I hope to hear from you soon.

A: First off I want to say thank you for reading my column.

You should ask yourself this :Why dont you want her to take the school course? Oh and be honest when you answer this question.

When I was in school sex ed, was just that sex education. They told us, and showed us pictures of the STI's that are out there, pregnancy and prevention. I think the best thing for you to do is to sit down and talk to her before she takes the class, let her know what to expect from it, and what she might hear. In all honestly if you talk about what you expect from her, from that part of her life, then taking the class will be nothing but taking the class.  It is not the Satan class everyone makes it out to be.

It is not what our children see that make them make the choices in life. It is how we as parents teach them, if you teach them sex is secrete its mysterious because you never talk about it, she has never seen anything like that, she will explore and see what it is about.

I understand what you mean by parents should teach there kids about sex, but sometimes we sugar coat things to protect. You should start the healthy foundation and be honest and open about sex even if you are uncomfortable talking about it, TALK!

Good Luck!

(let her take the class, she will get a lot of information out of it)
